Should I use Diazepam when I attend your course?

This is a question that was on our message board today.   This person is attending our upcoming Manchester course. Here is our answer:

That is a great question actually.

Well, ultimately, we are aiming to help you to get to a place where you don't need it at all. However, it is up to you.  A lot of people come onto the course and say that they are going to do the flight without the tablet.  The problem with doing a flight with something like that is this. It becomes part of a ritual/routine that needs to be obeyed come what may.  When you don't take it, it is easy to think...I am more nervous because I haven't.  The official answer from me is this:

Beating a fear is a process.  Our course is part of that process. One of the most effective techniques for beating any fear is using a gradual or graded exposure to your fear.  Each time we expose ourselves to a fear, our brain gets stronger.  Every time we compromise, give in, back down, walk away.... the relief is temporary.  We may tell ourselves 'next time it will be different, I will be stronger, it will be easier...'  But we know in our heart of hearts that we are tricking ourselves.  Later, in the cold light of day, we will know we could have done a bit more than we did.  So, if you are attending and you must take something, take less.  Each time you fly, reduce the dosage until it is not needed anymore.    A lot of people just 'go for it' on our courses.  They go 'cold turkey' and don't take anything. I think that it is an individual decision that only you can decide. There is no right or wrong. There is only progress or stagnation.  By coming onto the course, you are making a massive step in your process of beating your fear.  Little by little, any fear can be overcome if we don't give up on ourselves and don't expect ourselves to be perfect straight away.  Beating a fear is a big deal and should involve some levels of discomfort as you are undoing habitual patterns that have been allowed to do what they want till now.

Very much looking forward to seeing you at our course in Manchester.
Take care
